Shimmy is going on tour to old school stomping ground Ink Bar!
As always, a super sick line up of old school DJ pals. All of the DJs have a longstanding and deep connection to Ink going back well over 20 years – as both DJs and dancefloor supporters. It is a privilege to bring everyone together on one special night.
We hope you can join us on the dance floor!
About the DJs:
About: Ange
As a promoter Ange was the first DJ to run a monthly night at Ink Bar and one of the original resident DJ’s. Her monthly night Bump ran for 8 years and became a staple of the Auckland house scene.
In radio she was also the host of Saturday mornings and then hosted Tuesday Drive on George FM for 4 years in the early 2000’s – back when there were no playlists and the station was really pushing the boundaries with dance music.
She’s featured on loads of gigs and supported international DJ’s such as: Kevin Saunderson, Justin Harris, Detroit Grand Pubahs, Gene Farris, Derrick Carter, Inland Knights, Joshua and countless others.
Ange loves to play a mix of house and tech with in her sets, with big drums, sweeping melodies, sky-high wooshes and heart warming keys to make you bump, thump and wriggle your rump. Expect a set that is fun, layered, and energetic.
About: Paul Gunn
Paul has been a supporter of the Auckland House and Techno scene since the late 90’s where he was captured by the deep house scene centered around seminal club Calibre and his friends that DJed there and the clubs that surrounded it. He started DJing in clubs in 2004 with his first appearance at Ink in 2005 warming up for friend and club legend Soane. Since then he has played most clubs in town (including the last night of Calibre ever), playing at Ink and many other venues on legendary gigs such as Bump, Chicago Disco, Deep n Disco, True Believers, Electric Orange, Manuka Jam, Jack The Groove, Trouble at Home and many more. He has played on large events such as Sunsetter Festival, Fiesta Del Sol and Velvet and some memorable boat parties. Paul has held resident DJ slots on George FM back in the proper underground days (with friends Ed the Deep House Mantis and Azza). In 2018 he built (like actually built the venue and put in the biggest outdoor sound system in Auckland) and established the music scene at the Goodside at Smales Farm bringing legends such as Bevan Keys, Murray Sweetpants, Phully and Amy B to provide the North Shore with proper house music and outdoor festivals. Since 2020 he has been promoting and DJing at the hugely popular Shimmy and Hour of Power gigs at Ponsonby’s home of House the Fitzroy. Paul is stoked to return to Ink promoting Shimmy with his close and respected friends around him.
About: Yama
As a child, Yama broke many styli playing with his parents turntable and records. As a teen he would park himself in front of the stereo system at parties, CD wallet in hand. A wide variety of music would emanate from the speakers. But somewhere around 1999 in a side room at a rave he discovered House Music, thanks to local DJ legend Soane. Yama was hooked. After seeing Inland Knights play at Auckland nightclub “Calibre” a couple of weeks later, he went out and bought two turntables and a mixer and started learning the DJ craft. Since then he’s played many venues, bars, parties, and festivals about the place, and has dabbled a little in some music production. He also drops the occasional downtempo set, or smashes out the drum & bass if the mood suits.
About: Paul Gunn and Yama
Paul and Yama have played many back to back sets which consistently blow up dance floors with vocal laden bass grooves. They have never ever discussed or prepared for a set together but their shared taste for quality music and an innate connection to the energy of the room always blends seamlessly and delivers an unstoppable dancefloor.
About: Azza
Azza started DJing in 2001 while living in London, where he played his first club gig and was hooked. He has played a lot of top parties over the years, including True Believers, Chicago Disco, Electric Orange, Jack The Groove, Essence, Deep n Disco, Love Bug and Pitch n Faders to name just a few. In 2007 he had a Friday night show on George FM for 3 years called the Midnight Snack which he did with fellow music heads Ed, Bodge, Paul Gunn and a heap of guests. He has also played support for some of his favourite international producers, including Inland Knights, Da Sunlounge and Sonny Fodera. For the last 5 years he has been a resident on Ink Bar’s hugely-successful vinyl-only club night, “Black Wax”.
