If you looked up the word “institution” in the dictionary you are met with the definition; an organisation founded for a religious, educational, professional, or social purpose.

Similarly in New Zealand if there was an electronic music entity that personified that definition of institution, then chances are it would be Nick Collings.

As a curator of electronic music history Nick Collings has been part of the culture since he was a teenager and in 2022 celebrates 25 years as a DJ.

Some musical highlights so far:
• Nick was a serious vinyl pusher for a decade as owner of Criminal Records, one of Auckland, New Zealand’s hottest record stores for electronic vinyl during what many consider the golden era of the late 90’s / early 00’s.
• He was General Manager of local dance music radio station UP FM
• Online Editor for NZ Music Magazine Rip It Up & Groove Guide
• Host of Radio Hauraki’s first ever electronic music show ”In It For The Kicks” alongside Greg Churchill
• Founded Auckland Nightlife – Year 2000+ an online hub of 7000 people to connect about their experiences throughout the Auckland Nightlife from the Year 2000 onwards
• Came onboard for Lockdown Legends, an online live streaming group with 12,0000 members connecting people from around the world via live DJ streams.
• Currently can be found during daylight hours as the National Marketing Manager for Rockshop

Nick says the secret to longevity as a DJ is people and passion. “People’s tastes evolve, and as they grow and change, it’s important I grow and change too… I’ve always been open to many different styles of electronic music and my constant thirst for finding that next BIG tune hasn’t faltered a day. I love pushing new sounds whilst still finding familiarity with the audience that have supported me through this quarter century of playing other people’s music in dark sweaty nightclubs”.

A night of melodic through to chunky Tech infused House & Techno

Come check out the institution himself at Nick Collings and Friends – Friday December 16th.
